The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has some tips to make sure your Valentine’s Day doesn’t end with a call to the fire department.
The NFPA says that if you plan to cook a meal for your Valentine, be sure to stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food. Have a “kid and pet-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove. Also, be sure to keep a lid nearby when cooking – if a grease fire starts, you can put the lid on the pan and turn off the burner to put out the fire. They suggest setting a timer to remind you that you are cooking, too.
If you plan to use candles, the NFPA has safety tips to keep in mind as candles are a leading cause of home fires. Candles left unattended are one of the main causes of candle-related home fires, so never leave a burning candle unattended. Don’t use lit candles in bedrooms, bathrooms, and sleeping areas. Use stable candleholders, place candles where they cannot be easily knocked over, and keep them at least one foot away from anything that can burn. Store matches and lighters up high, out of children’s reach, preferably in a locked cabinet. Finally, blow out candles when you leave the room or go to bed.
