A former Butler County man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend last year has accepted a plea deal that will spare his life.
Matthew Darby, 21, entered a guilty plea Wednesday to first degree murder in Pittsburgh. The Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office announced their intent earlier this year to seek the death penalty against Darby, but the deal will result in him instead spending the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Darby is accused of killing Alina Sheykhet in October of 2017 at her house in Oakland, near the University of Pittsburgh campus. He then fled to South Carolina before being captured by police.
Darby used to live in Cranberry Township and graduated from Seneca Valley High School.
