State game officials are asking hunters for help to limit the spread of a disease in rabbits.
Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease, or RHD, is a very resilient virus that can make rabbits lethargic with no appetite before blood comes from their mouths or noses.
The disease is spread in many ways with no treatment available but it has only been detected in Pennsylvania once and does not pose any human health risk. Rabbit owners with questions should contact a veterinarian.
Anyone who finds two or more dead rabbits in the same location with no apparent cause of death is asked to contact the Pennsylvania Game Commission by phone or online.
The Commission is also looking for hunters to join their snowshoe hare cooperator program which collects data about the number, location, and appearance of these animals by mail.
