The Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 last night. The Pirates will try to win two out of the four game series tonight. First pitch at 10:10 on WISR.
The Pirates received a scare in the seventh inning when Andrew McCutchen landed on his sore elbow while trying to avoid ball four from Dodgers reliever Phil Bickford. After waiting for the pain to subside, McCutchen stayed in the game to the end.
Penguins:
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Drew O’Connor has filed for salary arbitration as a restricted free agent.
On Wednesday, the NHL Players’ Association announced 22 players had elected to file for arbitration with O’Connor being the lone member of the Penguins doing so.
O’Connor, 25, broke through last season. O’Connor appeared in 46 games and scored 11 points (five goals, six assists).
O’Connor just completed a one-year contract that carried a salary cap hit of $750,000. He is one of five restricted free agents the Penguins hold the NHL rights to including forwards Jonathan Gruden and Filip Hallander, defenseman Ty Smith and goaltender Filip Lindberg.
The Penguins formally extended qualifying offers Friday to all five players to retain their signing rights.
A deadline for teams to elect salary arbitration is 5 p.m. Thursday. Salary arbitration hearings are scheduled to be held from July 20-Aug. 4.
Patric Hornqvist, a vital component of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017 has retired. The 36-year-old power forward announced his retirement on Wednesday.
TSITSIPAS SURVIVES AT WIMBLEDON:
Number 5-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas (SEET –SEE-PAAS) advanced to the second round at Wimbledon yesterday after a five-set thriller against Austria’s Dominic Thiem. (TEAM) It took him almost four hours and two tiebreaks to get the win, with a score of 3-6, 7-6, 6-2, 7-6.
- Novak Djokovic, the seven-time and reigning Wimbledon champion, advanced to the third round after defeating Australia’s Jordan Thompson 6-3, 7-6, 7-5.
- Iga Swiatek (e-guh Schwa-tek) easily made it to the second round, defeating Spain’s Sara SorribesTormo 6-2, 6-0.
