A closely divided state House of Representatives found a compromise candidate to become the next Speaker of the House.
Democrat Mark Rozzi of Berks County was elected to the position by a 115 to 85 vote. Soon after winning the gavel, Rozzi said he’ll be an independent.
“I pledge to caucus with neither the Republicans nor the Democrats,” Rozzi said. “My staff will be made up of both parties. I pledge my allegiance and my loyalty to no interest in this building. I pledge my loyalty to the people of the Commonwealth.”
As the legislative session begins, Republicans hold a 101 to 99 majority over Democrats. However, three seats that are vacant are expected to be won by Democrats in special elections later this year.
