More than 300 motorcycles took to the streets of Butler County over the weekend to raise money for local cancer patients.
It was the seventh annual Riding for the Cure on Saturday. Bikers gathered at Rock Ann Haven in Butler Township in the morning, traveled to four different stops, and ended at the Longhorn Corral on Route 422 for an after-party.
Vice president of Riding For The Cure Ned Kerr said the event started to specifically raise money for breast cancer patients, but now proceeds benefit all types of cancer patients.
“It doesn’t just benefit breast cancer patients now, because we’ve been able to raise more money,” Kerr said. “It now benefits all cancer patients.”
So, how much money was raised this year? $50,310.02- and that’s just from this year’s event.
“We’ve given away $223,000 in seven years to cancer patients,” Kerr said.
The money goes towards patients’ basic needs, like groceries, medication, gas money and wigs.
Kerr and his wife started the event, but say it’s the people, businesses and organizations of this community that have grown it to be what it is today.
The event is always held on the last Saturday of July.
