Portions of the Pennsylvania Turnpike are now cashless- which leaves some to wonder- are people actually paying the tolls or just passing through?
Our news partners at WPXI-TV took a look at the toll-by-plate billing and found out a lot of drivers are simply skipping the payment.
The turnpike mailed out 2.7 million toll-by-plate invoices last year and nearly a third of them remain unpaid.
Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFabo says there are options available for the turnpike to get the money- including turning the bill over to a collection agency.
The turnpike has plans to implement the toll-by-plate system across the entire roadway by 2022.
