Local police are asking residents in and around the Slippery Rock area to be aware of what could be a scam involving donations to the Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team.
According to the Slippery Rock Borough Police Department, some residents have received a letter in the mail titled “2018 Slippery Rock Area Volunteer Drive Reply Form.”
This letter requests that donations to the department be mailed to Topeka, Kansas.
Although police say this could be a legitimate organization, any money sent will not go directly to the Slippery Rock VFD.
The Slippery Rock VFD plans to do their own annual fundraising drive by mail in October. When that happens, firefighters say a letter will come directly from the fire company, it will be clearly labeled, and all money sent in will go directly to the local department.
“If you wish to volunteer for your local fire department, or want to make a monetary donation, please contact your local fire department directly,” police said.
