The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Atlanta Braves 7-4 last night at PNC Park. Joe Musgrove earned the win for the Bucs. Joe Musgrove pitched eight full innings for the Pirates for his fourth victory of the year. Musgrove attempted a complete game, but was relieved in the ninth inning after allowing back-to-back home runs to the Braves. He allowed five hits, walking one and striking out six.
Felipe Vazquez gave up the other run in the ninth, but got the final three outs.
Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco had three hits each. Bryan Reynolds also had a hit for his 13th consecutive game.
Last night’s game was delayed by rain for two hours. The Bucs and Braves complete their series this afternoon at 12:35pm. Chris Archer will start for the Pirates. The Pirates head to Milwaukee after the game.
Injured starting pitcher Trevor Williams completed a successful bullpen session this week, as he works his way back from a side strain. Williams is expected to throw a simulated game this weekend – and could do a rehab start at Triple-A Indianapolis next week.
The Chicago Cubs have signed free agent reliever Craig Kimbrel to a three-year $43 million contract. Kimbrel had 42 saves in 47 chances last season for the World Series champion Boston Red Sox.
