The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a five-player trade with the Cleveland Indians Wednesday. The Bucs sent outfielder Jordan Luplow and infielder Max Moroff to the Indians for 27-year old utility infielder Erik Gonzalez along with two minor league pitchers. Gonzalez batted .265 last season with Cleveland while appearing in 81 games. He played in 30 games at second base, 20 at third base and 16 at shortstop.
The Pirates have to replace Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison who are free agents. The trade also frees up another spot on the 40-man roster. The Bucs need to protect several players from the Rule-5 draft in December, including pitching prospect Mitch Keller.
New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob DeGrom has won the National League Cy Young Award. He is the sixth Mets pitcher to win the award. DeGrom led all of baseball with a 1.70 ERA, the second-lowest ERA by a starter this century. Washington’s Max Scherzer was the runner-up.
Tampa Bay left-hander Blake Snell won the American League Award. Snell led the A.L. with 21 victories and a 1.89 ERA.
