The Chicago Cubs defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 last night to split their four-game series at Wrigley Field. Pirates starter Trevor Williams allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings in his final start of the season. Williams finishes the year 14-10 with a 3.11 ERA. Cubs starting pitcher Jon Lester limited the Pirates to just three hits over six innings for his 18th win of the season. Shortstop Jordy Mercer had two of the Pirates four hits.
Trevor Williams’ ERA ranks 14th overall this season in Major League Baseball. In 12 starts after the All-Star break, he allowed just 11 earned runs for a 1.38 ERA.
The Pirates will play their final three games of the season in Cincinnati. Tonight’s game begins at 6:40pm.
The Pirates will promote infielder Jung Ho Kang to the majors for the final series this weekend. Kang has been working his way back from personal issues and wrist surgery.
The Cubs enter the final weekend leading the Milwaukee Brewers by one game in the National League Central Division with three games remaining. The Brewers swept the St. Louis Cardinals this week, eliminating the Cardinals from the post-season. The Colorado Rockies lead the Los Angeles Dodgers by one game in the West. The Dodgers and Brewers are currently the two Wild Card teams.
