The Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the Minnesota Twins 5-1 Monday to complete their pre-season schedule. Rookie Thomas Harrington started yesterday’s game. He allowed four runs on five hits over three innings. The Pirates had six hits in the game. Bryan Reynolds had two of the hits, and the only extra-base hit drove in the Bucs lone run.
The Bucs lost their last five games of Grapefruit League play. They finished with a 14-15-1 overall record marking the eighth straight season they conclude Grapefruit League play without a winning record. Their 14 wins is the best since 2019 when they went 15-15.
After the game, Harrington was among a handful of players reassigned to the Pirates minor league training camp. He was joined by outfielder-first baseman D.J. Stewart and reliever Tanner Rainey. The Pirates will add Carmen Mlodzinski to their starting rotation in place of the injured Jared Jones. With Stewart being sent down, it appears Jack Suwinski and Ji Hwan Bae will make the opening day roster. The Pirates still have to make a few cuts to reach the final roster of 26.
The Pirates begin their season in Miami Thursday afternoon at 4:10pm. Hear the game on WISR beginning at 3:45pm. 2024 National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes will start for the Bucs. 2022 N.L. Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara will start for the Marlins. Alcantara missed the entire 2024 season after having Tommy John surgery. It will also be interested to see if he is still in Miami by game time, with rumor swirling around Alcantara being traded to the New York Yankees, who have lost two of their top pitchers in Gerrit Cole for the season and Luis Gil for multiple months.
