The Pittsburgh Pirates lost 5-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays in exhibition baseball Wednesday. Newly acquired left-handed starting pitcher Andrew Heaney had his best start of spring training, allowed three earned runs on six hits, while pitching into the fifth inning. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.
Three batters attempting to make the roster each had two hits. Jack Suwinski and Henry Davis were joined by Ji Hawn Bae, who had a pair of doubles. Bae leads the Pirates in Grapefruit League play with 16 hits in 17 games. He is batting .444 this spring. But, he may not find a roster spot, as Suwinski is batting .371 with an impressive slugging percentage over 12 games.
