The Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the New York Mets 1-0 Sunday at PNC Park. Mets starting pitcher Zack Wheeler held the Bucs to five hits over his six innings of work, striking out seven. Wheeler also drove in the game’s only run, with a double in the fifth inning. Pirates starter Joe Musgrove also allowed just five hits over seven innings, but took the loss. Gregory Polanco had three of the Pirates six hits in the game.
The Pirates and Mets split their four-game series. The Pirates are off today, then host the Chicago Cubs for two games beginning Tuesday.
The Chicago Cubs avoided a series sweep by the St. Louis Cardinals, with a 5-2 victory last night. The Pirates fell to seven games behind the Cubs. The Bucs fell to four games behind the last National League Wild Card. Currently, Milwaukee and Arizona hold the two Wild Cards.
Over the weekend, the Pirates placed outfielder Corey Dickerson and first baseman Josh Bell on the disabled list. Jose Osuna and Austin Meadows were recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. They also sent reliever Michael Feliz to Indianapolis and called up reliever Alex McRae. The Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline is Tuesday afternoon.
