The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 Wednesday afternoon to avoid a series sweep. Jameson Taillon won his 13th game of the season. He allowed two runs on four hits over seven innings. Taillon, making his 29th start of the year, has reached a career-high 171 innings pitched this season. Felipe Vazquez allowed a run in the ninth inning, but earned his 32nd save. Catcher Jacob Stallings drove in three runs and outfielder Jordan Luplow had three hits and scored twice.
The Pirates are off today, then visit Milwaukee ths weekend.
Outfielder Gregory Polanco underwent surgery yesterday to repair a dislocated shoulder. He was injured on a bad slide into second base last Friday and also suffered a bone bruise in his knee.
