The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers by a final score of 4-1 Monday night in Philadelphia. Goaltender Matt Murray stopped 50 of 51 shots the Flyers fired at him including a franchise-tying record 28 shots on goal in the second period. Sidney Crosby scored the first goal of the game which was also his 24th of the season. Winger Jake Guentzel netted his 27th of the 2018-19 campaign. The win ended the Penguins four game losing streak as well as the Flyers ten game winning streak.
Defenseman Olli Maatta left the game in the first period with an upper-body injury. He has since been placed on the Injured Reserve list and will be out indefinitely. Defenseman Justin Schultz remains out. Evgeni Malkin returned from injury but was tossed from the last five minutes of the game after swinging his stick at a Flyers player who had punched him in the back of the head. Malkin will speak with NHL representatives concerning the possibility of additional discipline.
The Pens begin a three game home stand Wednesday when they host Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.
