State lawmakers, including a local Senator, and family law experts are raising awareness of a new law regarding child custody and grandparents.
The new legislation approves legal standing for a third party, such as a grandparent, in determining custody in cases where biological parents are deceased or no longer able to care for a child.
State Senator Don White says it doesn’t guarantee grandparents will win custody, but does recognize they should be considered.
White says the opioid crisis has made this necessary.
