Three local municipalities have joined together in the creation of the new Connoquenessing Valley Regional Emergency Management Agency.
The intergovernmental agreement creating the new agency was signed Monday night at the Connoquenessing Township Municipal Building by representatives of Connoquenessing Township and Borough, as well as Evans City Borough.
The agreement represents a multiple-year effort by these municipalities to take a proactive approach to community emergency preparedness.
“All the municipalities will stand behind the agency and support it financially. They will also each provide a single elected official to serve on an executive committee that will oversee the financial aspects of the agency so that we can continuously provide emergency planning and emergency management services for the municipalities,” Daniel Cox said. He was appointed the Acting Emergency Management Coordinator for the new group.
The new agency was formed when the three municipalities found themselves struggling to find a volunteer to serve as emergency management coordinator as required by state law.
Cox says community involvement will be key to help with staffing.
“We’re also going to be looking for the community to get engaged with us to prepare from a community-wide perspective, so we’ll be reaching out to residents, local businesses, churches and other organizations so that we can come together and plan for emergencies and disasters on a larger scale,” he said.
The Connoquenessing borough municipal building will serve as the agency’s command center in the event of a disaster.
