The City of Butler will have a new Police Chief effective November 1st. Robert O’Neill was appointed by Mayor Ben Smith Tuesday night as the next head of the 23-officer department. O’Neill describes his goals,“I’ve worked in the City of Butler many times and with officers in and around here so I’m really looking forward to working with Council and the mayor and all of my new buddies on the police force in trying to form a plan to continue the great work that is being done here in Butler.”
O’Neill will be paid just over $89,000 per year and will continue in the job as long as the mayor of the city permits. He comes from a law enforcement family with his father and two brothers serving as police officers. O’Neill plans to meet with local officers and the community.
O’Neill started off in the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh before spending 17 years with the Cranberry Township Police and the Butler County Drug Task Force. He most recently served just over a year with the Adams Township Police. Councilman Jeff Smith said, “Some of my friends down in Cranberry when they knew that Bob was interested, it was, you guys aren’t hitting a home run, you guys are hitting a grand slam so we are glad to have you, Bob.”
O’Neill has spent many years coaching youth football in the Seneca Valley and Central Catholic School Districts. He also lost a close race for Butler County Commissioner in the 2015 Republican primary to Kim Geyer.
