The leader of Congregation B’nai Abraham in Butler is still trying to process the horrific events of Saturday.
Cantor Michal Gray-Schaffer lives in Squirrell Hill near the Tree of Life synagogue, and previously served as a cantor there.
“It’s too hard. There are no words to understand how someone could have such hate in his heart to do this,” Gray-Schaffer said in an interview on Monday. “You can’t fathom what lead a person to do this. But you can see the good in people that comes out after a tragedy like this.”
Gray-Schaffer says she passed along the words of Mr. Rodgers’ mother to her congregation in Butler in the wake of the shooting.
“I sent a letter to my congregation and I basically quoted Mr. Rodgers’ mother who told her son to look for the helpers when there is a tragedy,” she said.
Some of those helpers to Gray-Schaffer have been fellow spiritual leaders in Butler.
“The ones that I know were texting me right away to make sure I was OK,” she said. “They reached out just to send love and support.”
An interfaith vigil and service has been planned for Thursday at Congregation B’nai Abraham on North Main Street in Butler. All are welcome. It begins at 7 p.m.
