Pennsylvania is having its worst outbreak of West Nile Virus in 15 years.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection found more than 4,600 positive samples of the virus in mosquitoes this year- the most since the virus first turned up in Pennsylvania in 2000.
There were 72 human cases reported across the state and three deaths– one each in Westmoreland, Lancaster and Lebanon counties.
The DEP’s Neil Shader says this was the second highest number of human cases reported–but it’s far less than the 237 cases in 2003.
“And that’s a testament to the work of the West Nile Virus program,” Shader said.
Officials with the West Nile Virus program continue to spray to control mosquito populations, and continue to educate people on how to protect themselves from the virus.
