High School Sports:
–Butler wrestler Christian Sequete won the WPIAL 182-pound championship Saturday by defeating defending two-time champion Tim Wallace of Albert Gallatin 9-2. Sequete becomes just the second Butler wrestler ever to win a WPIAL title. He is 33-3 overall this season heading into the state tournament. Two of his three losses were to Wallace.
–The Slippery Rock girls basketball team won the District-10 5A championship Saturday with a 47-45 win over Harbor Creek at Meadville high school. Slippery Rock will meet Thomas Jefferson Saturday at 4pm at Sharon high school in the opening round of the state tournament. Also in 5A: Mars will face Obama Academy at Allderdice high school Saturday at 4pm.
–The Karns City boys won their second consecutive District-9 3A title Friday with a 34-31 win over Brookville. Austin Fahlor hit a three-point shot at the buzzer for the victory. The Gremlins will meet Mercyhurst Prep Saturday in the PIAA first round at Keystone high school at 6pm. Also in 3A, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic will meet Greenville Saturday at Meadville high school at 7pm.
–The AC Valley girls lost in the D9 1A title game 52-49 to North Clarion Saturday. The Falcons will meet Sewickley Academy at Keystone high school Saturday at 4pm in the first round of the PIAA 1A tournament.
–Brookville defeated the Karns City girls 46-39 Friday in the D9 3A championship, ending the Gremlins four-year title run. (the Gremlins miss the PIAA playoffs with the loss).
–PIAA Girls 4A: Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic will meet Keystone Oaks Saturday at 3pm at Northgate high school.
–The WPIAL champion Mars boys will meet Hampton in the PIAA first round at Fox Chapel high school Friday at 7:30pm.
–In the WPIAL 6A championship games Saturday: The Penn Hills boys defeated Pine-Richland 60-56. The Rams will meet Central Catholic at Fox Chapel high school Saturday at 4pm in the PIAA first round.
–The North Allegheny girls defeated Peters Township 79-48 to improve to 25-0. North Allegheny will meet Upper St. Clair Friday at 6pm at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic high school in the first round of the state tournament.
Hockey:
The Penguins Cup playoffs begin tonight.
–Seneca Valley will meet Bethel Park in the 3A first round at the Baierl Ice Complex at 7pm.
–Butler will face North Allegheny Tuesday at 8:30pm.
–Mars will face Franklin Regional tonight in the 2A play-in round at Center Ice at 7pm.
–The Butler middle school team defeated Burrell 8-3 in the quarterfinals. They will play again in the semifinals March 14th
