A former Butler County man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend last year has accepted a plea deal that will spare his life.
21-year-old Matthew Darby entered a guilty plea Wednesday morning to first degree murder in Pittsburgh. The Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office announced intent earlier this year to seek the death penalty but the deal will result in a life in prison term without parole.
Darby is accused of killing Alina Sheykhet in October of 2017 at her house in Oakland, near the University of Pittsburgh campus. He then fled to South Carolina before being captured by police.
Darby used to live in Cranberry Township and graduated from Seneca Valley High School.
