The Federal Emergency Management Agency will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System this afternoon.
A portion of this test will mean newer cellphones will “go off” with an alert tone at exactly 2:18 p.m. This will happen even if your phone is on silent mode.
The alert will not come across a phone if it is powered off. Cellphones must be equipped to support the Wireless Emergency Alert System to comply.
The presidential alerts will only be used in the event of a national emergency.
