PennDOT says the crossing signal lights that had not been working properly at a northern Butler County intersection have been fixed.
District 10 Manager Mike Mattis said his department was first notified of the issue at the intersection of Route 38 and Hooker Road in Concord Township on Monday morning following an accident. Someone went up and reset the lights.
Another accident was reported at the same intersection on Tuesday morning about 8 a.m. Concord Township Supervisor Candy Nassy said it appeared the lights weren’t working this morning.
Mattis said that could have been the case, as his department isn’t automatically notified when the lights to out.
“We rely on calls from the public to alert us,” Mattis said Tuesday afternoon. He suggests calling 911 when the lights are out. The 911 center will then alert PennDOT.
The signals are on a black screen and have the words ‘crossing traffic’ with a graphic of a car moving across if there is a car coming. They can be found at various intersections in northern Butler County, where there are not traffic lights.

At least two accidents have been reported at a northern Butler County intersection that has not had its crossing signal lights working properly.
Concord Township Supervisor Candy Nassy says the crossing signals at the intersection of Route 38 and Hooker Road have been out since at least Saturday morning.
If you’re traveling on Hooker Road, the signals are on a black screen and have the words ‘crossing traffic’ with a graphic of a lighted car moving across if there is a car coming on Route 38. If you’re traveling on Route 38, the signs have a picture of an intersection and a lighted car sitting on whichever side of Hooker Road there is a vehicle on.
Nassy says the blinking lights at the intersection are the responsibility of the township and those are still working.
“It’s the crossing signal lights that are out and that is a PennDOT responsibility,” she said. “I wasn’t notified by PennDOT directly that they were out. I saw that people were talking about them being out on social media on Saturday and I went to check for myself, and found them out.”
Nassy says she has contacted PennDOT several times to let them know about the outage but as of late Tuesday morning, had not yet heard back.
Two rush-hour accidents have been reported at the intersection, including one Tuesday at 8 a.m., according to the Butler County 911 Center. Another accident happened about 6 a.m. Monday, according to Nassy.
She’s now urging drivers to be extra cautious.
“They need to not rely so much on the driving aide that usually is available,” she said.
Some residents in that area have said the crossing signals have gone out before for a few hours, but they can’t ever remember a time when they’ve gone out for days at a time.
Butler Radio contacted PennDOT District 10, which represents Butler County, and the district’s public information officer Deborah Casadei said she would look into the matter and get back to us.
