The chairman of the Butler County board of commissioners is disappointed that synagogue shooting suspect Robert Bowers has been transferred to the Butler County Prison, but also understands the county’s responsibility.
Commissioner Leslie Osche said the county does have a contract with the U.S. Marshal Service, and it’s not uncommon for federal inmates to be housed in Butler, but she also believes in the case of Bowers, it was “above and beyond the norm.”
The commissioner went on to say that she, and Commissioner Kim Geyer, support Butler County Prison Warden Joe DeMore, and his team, in their decisions and professionalism regarding security matters.
She said she was disappointed that Bowers’ transfer reached the media before the Butler County Prison Board knew it was happening.
“We question why the Chairman of the Prison Board did not seem to have respect for the remaining board members who fully carry the risk, liability, fiduciary responsibility and in the case of the DA responsibility for local law enforcement so as to notify us earlier, that we may have been briefed on the steps being taken to address said risk, liability, cost and notification of law enforcement whose jurisdictions may be impacted. We answer to county constituents and would have appreciated the opportunity to have the most basic answers earlier than later,” Osche said in an email.
The board includes the commissioners, Sheriff Mike Slupe, District Attorney Rich Goldinger, Controller Ben Holland and Judge Timothy McCune.
