The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, which oversees parishes in six counties including Butler, revealed their reorganization plan earlier this weekend.
On Saturday, Bishop David Zubik announced the 57 parish groups that will be created by the ‘On Mission For The Church Alive’ Initiative. The initiative was created nearly three years ago to combat the declining number of people attending mass and the declining number of priests.
Butler and northern Allegheny counties, which fall under Vicariate Four of the initiative, will see the following changes:
- BUTLER/CENTER/LYNDORA/MERIDIAN – St. Andrew (Center), St. Fidelis of Sigmaringen (Lyndora/Meridian), St. Michael the Archangel (Butler), St. Paul (Butler), St. Peter (Butler)
- NORTHERN BUTLER COUNTY – St. Alphonsus (Boyers/ Murrinsville/West Sunbury), St. Christopher (Prospect), St. Peter (Slippery Rock)
- CARBON CENTER/CHICORA/NORTH OAKLAND – St. Joseph (North Oakland), Mater Dolorosa (Chicora), St. Wendelin (Carbon Center)
- CABOT/COYLESVILLE/HERMAN – St. John (Coylesville), St. Joseph (Cabot), St. Mary of the Assumption (Herman)
- CRANBERRY/ELLWOOD CITY/ZELIENOPLE – St. Ferdinand (Cranberry), St. Gregory (Zelienople), Holy Redeemer (Ellwood City/Koppel/Wampum)
- ADAMS/CRANBERRY/GLADE MILLS – Holy Sepulcher (Glade Mills), St. Kilian (Adams/Cranberry)
- HAMPTON/RICHLAND – St. Catherine of Sweden (Hampton), St. Richard (Richland)

The reorganization will begin in October and will take about finish between 2020 and 2023.
