Students in the Butler Area School District will learn more about the reasons why Veterans Day is observed at a few upcoming programs.
Speakers from the American Legion and VFW will present a flag folding ceremony for 7th graders. A retired guard from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier will give a presentation to 8th graders. One of the ROTC instructors at the Intermediate will give 9th graders his perspective and personal story about service.
Social studies teacher at the Butler Intermediate High School Breit Cochran said it’s important for students to learn about the holiday.
“These presentations, in part, allow students to see the importance of why we celebrate Veterans Day and give them perspectives from different Veteran groups to explain why we honor Veterans Day,” Cochran said.
Many 8th grade students will be attending a field trip to Washington D.C. with a stop at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier so hearing more about the history of the site will help them appreciate the experience.
“It lets the students see why we celebrate this day and how can we better honor these individuals who have served our country?” Cochran said.
This is the fifth year that Butler Intermediate teachers have put on a veterans program like this one for students.
