The Butler Area School District could begin random drug testing of a large number of students as early as this fall.
School board members and administrators discussed implementing a Substance Abuse Policy during Monday’s school board meeting, which the board says would be similar to the one currently used at Seneca Valley and Mars.
Changes could be made before the policy is officially adopted but it is expected that students requesting driving privileges, as well as those participating in athletics and other extra-curricular activities, would be subject to the random drug testing.
The board says says it’s not permitted to do random drug testing of all students in general, but this elective policy has survived a Supreme Court challenge.
The district would be responsible for contracting with a company to provide the testing.
The first reading of this new policy is expected to occur at next week’s board meeting.
