Butler City Police Chief Ron Brown has retired.
Butler Mayor Ben Smith said Brown submitted his resignation on Monday and the mayor accepted it.
Brown will receive his full pension as earned through his 28 years of service on the force.
It’s unclear when or how a new chief will be selected.

Brown’s retirement comes after he and Deputy Chief Dave Adam were placed on paid administrative leave by the mayor last week.
Mayor Ben Smith has been relatively mum on the issue, not detailing exactly why he made the moves.
He said Friday during a conversation with Butler Radio’s Dave Malarkey that he doesn’t want to be secretive, but he has to when dealing with personnel issues.
“They have been placed on paid administrative leave. I don’t have a timeline. There’s a lot that is going on behind the scenes. I have to be tight-lipped, legally, to make sure we’re protecting the individuals involved,” Smith said.
Then-Chief Ron Brown and Deputy Chief Dave Adam were placed on paid leave a day after it became public that the police union had taken a no-confidence vote in June against the department’s two leaders.
President of the Butler Fraternal Order of Police Lt. Chad Rensel said the union took the vote because of what they thought was a lack of leadership and strategy by the chief and deputy chief.
“Those things are being investigated and discussed. There was discussion before that vote was taken, and before it came to light,” Smith said.
The mayor said Monday that Deputy Chief Adam remains on paid leave. Captain James Hollobaugh remains the officer-in-charge of the 21-member Butler City Police Department.
