Butler Health System is taking measures to deal with the number of people currently in need of intensive care.
According to a press release from BHS Wednesday afternoon, both Butler Memorial Hospital and Clarion Hospital have reached ICU capacity. The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit at Butler Memorial Hospital is being converted to a critical care unit which adds 15 ICU beds.
BHS has decided to suspend elective procedures that require an in-patient stay to make more beds available. Outpatient procedures that do not require admission will continue to be performed. A number of nurses have been temporarily reassigned in order to provide the best care possible for patients.
As of Wednesday morning, Butler Memorial Hospital is treating 44 patients for the coronavirus, with seven people in the ICU. Butler Health System reported one death to the PA Department of Health on Tuesday.
