High School Sports:
WPIAL Soccer Playoffs:
–The Butler Girls defeated defending WPIAL champion Penn-Trafford 4-1 Saturday in the 4A first round. Chloe Weiland scored twice for the Golden Tornado, who improved to 11-5-2. They will meet Peters Township Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
–Pine-Richland defeated Hempfield 9-0 and will face Upper St. Clair Wednesday. Seneca Valley had a first-round “bye” and will meet Mt. Lebanon Wednesday. North Allegheny will meet Norwin.
–In the 3A First Round – Mars defeated Greensburg Salem 9-0. Caroline Wroblewski and Ellie Coffield scored twice for Mars. The Planets improved to 16-0 and will meet Montour in the quarterfinals Wednesday.
–Freeport defeated North Catholic 3-0 in the 2A First Round. Sidney Shemanski led Freeport with two goals and goalie Maddie Wagner stopped all eight North Catholic shots. The Yellow Jackets improved to 11-6-2 and get South Park Wednesday in the quarterfinals.
The Boys Soccer First Round begins tonight.
–4A: Butler will host Latrobe at 7pm. Butler is 10-4-2. Latrobe is 11-6-1.
–Pine-Richland wil host Plum at 8pm. North Allegheny will visit Peters Township at 8pm.
–In 3A: Mars will host Chartiers Valley. The Planets enter the game 16-1-1. Game time is 8pm.
–In 2A: Freeport will visit Quaker Valley at 8pm.
–North Catholic will face Shady Side Academy at Mars high school at 6pm.
In the District 9 Soccer Playoffs:
–The Karns City Girls will meet Clearfield Tuesday at Brockway high school. Game time is 5pm.
–The Karns City Boys will face Elk County Christian Wednesday.
In Friday night’s victory over Trinity, Knoch running back Matt Goodlin rushed for 135 yards. That gives Matt 1,165 yards this season, third-best in Knoch school history for a nine-game season. Only Tim McNerney, who rushed for 1,431 yards in 2007 and A.J. Pagano, who rushed for 1,200 yards in 1983 are better.
Moniteau’s Cody Wise rushed for 233 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns in the Warriors 32-21 victory over Punxsutawney Friday.
