The Butler County 911 Center was honored as this year’s Community Champion Friday afternoon.
It was a ceremony that was delayed due to the pandemic, but a gathering that brought together a group of people responsible for creating the 911 center 51 years ago.
The idea for the center started with Annabel Brunermer, who read about the concept of 911 in Readers Digest. She was amazed at how far the center has come.
“The growth of the system is overwhelming. Because Butler’s 911 system was the first system in the state, it set an example for other counties in Pennsylvania,” Brunermer said.
Brunermer was the president of the Intermediate League of Butler at the time and Commissioner Leslie Osche says that groups like that still play an important role in our community today.
“And it also is testament to the importance of our civic groups. Because [Brunermer] had a group of ladies behind her as a civic and service organization that could reach out and make that happen,” Osche said.
The luncheon and ceremony was presented by the Butler County Chamber of Commerce and their annual Community Champion award.
