This week- across the country and here in Butler County- is Safe Boating Week.
The Butler County commissioners made the proclamation during a meeting last week in an effort to remind boaters of the safety measures they should take before heading out on the water.
Things like checking the forecast, doing an all-over vessel check, having enough life jackets, and having a fire extinguisher all seem like simple things, but they can sometimes be overlooked.
Ray Nagy of Butler is with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. He said 700 people die each year in the United States in boating accidents. Seventy percent of those deaths are from drowning.
“Boating is very enjoyable, but it can also be dangerous and risky,” Nagy said. “Wear your life jackets.”
Safe Boating Week typically falls the week before Memorial Day weekend, when many boaters head out on the water for the first time this season.
“I’m pleased the Butler County commissioners continue to recognize Safe Boating Week here in the county. This is a tribute to boating safety,” he said.
