The City of Butler will receive help to pay for new equipment in the form of a large grant.
According to Building Code Official John Evans, the city was notified earlier this month that the Department of Environmental Protection has awarded the city nearly $67,000.
The money will be used to pay for a new leaf collector vacuum as well as two collection boxes. The remainder will be put towards paying for a new truck recently purchased for use by the streets department.
Evans gave credit for a team effort of city employees and departments to get the grant and mentioned that the City of Butler was the only municipality in the county to apply for and receive this funding.
About 15 years ago, a similar grant was used to help pay for the current leaf collector which is now very close to not being able to function.
Also at the Butler City Council meeting last night, council approved the sale of the fire department’s partially functioning ladder truck.
The 1998 American LaFrance Aerial Fire Truck will be sold to Joshua Cox for $20,001.
According to Director of Public Safety Councilman Corey Roche, this person works for a truck company with connections to the Sadsbury Township Conneaut Lake Borough Volunteer Fire Department which tried to purchase the same truck for the same price in June.
The department plans to use Butler’s truck for parts. They have an engine that has the same cab which was involved in an accident so they will remove the cab from Butler’s engine and put it on their engine.
The City has been receiving ladder truck coverage when needed from Butler Township’s ladder truck. The City and the Township recently agreed to hire a joint Fire Chief.
