The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 13-6 Sunday in the final game of the season at PNC Park. Pirates starter Nick Kingham allowed six runs, five earned, in just 1-1/3rd innings. Relievers Steven Brault and Michael Feliz allowed another four earned runs in an ugly sixth inning after the Pirates had cut the lead to 7-4. Adam Frazier had his 10th home run of the season for the Pirates.
The Pirates visit the Chicago Cubs for the first of four games beginning tonight at 8:05pm. Jameson Taillon goes to the mound for the Pirates seeking his 14th win of the year. Cole Hamels will start the game for the Cubs.
The Pirates are 78-76 overall and have been officially eliminated from the post-season. The Cubs have the best record in the National League and lead Milwaukee by 2-1/2 games in the Central Division with a week to play.
As part of their closing weekend festivities, the Pirates honored Altoona third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes as their Minor League Player of the Year. Hayes set the all-time mark for fielding percentage in the Eastern League, and set career-highs in six batting categories. He hit .293 for the season. Teddy Brubaker was named the Pitcher of the Year. Brubaker was the Altoona Curve opening day starter, and was promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis in May. He totaled a 10-6 record and 2.81 ERA at both levels this season.
