A blood drive will be held this weekend in Petrolia in honor of a local man who was shot in a Chicora bar last month.
The family of Heath Schrecengost will host the drive on Sunday, Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Petrolia Social Hall on Argyle Street. Donations will benefit the blood bank at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, which is where Schrencengost was treated following the shooting.
Officials say he needed more than 25 units of blood in the first 24 hours of his ordeal. He has undergone three surgeries since then and needed many more blood products. He is now home and recovering from his injuries.
The blood drive is being conducted by Vitalant (formerly Central Blood Bank).
“Everything was handled so wonderfully at Presby, and the blood bank was there for Heath, so we as a family wanted to replenish the local blood supply and show some support for Heath at the same time,” says Taryn Best, Heath’s cousin.
To schedule an appointment, donors can visit the website vitalant.org or call 877-25 VITAL (84825). The Central Blood Bank donor mobile app also is still available for scheduling. Use group code Z0021083 to register for this drive. Walk-ins also welcome.
Schrencengost, 27, of Karns City, was shot in September inside the Millerstown Inn. Police believe he did not know, or have any interaction, with the man that shot him. A fundraiser was held this past weekend to help raise money for his medical costs.
