The state’s secretary of agriculture talked with local farmers at an annual event in Butler yesterday.
Over 100 people gathered at the American Legion in Lyndora and heard from Russell Redding on the latest initiatives surrounding the agricultural industry across the state.
This was the fourth year of the Farmers Breakfast event, which was sponsored by State Representatives Marci Mustello and Aaron Bernstine.
“I think there was a lot of beneficial information today,” Mustello said. “He gave his view on different issues like marijuana and chemicals that are used to treat farmlands, and whether that will be a federal or state issue.”
Mustello also said Redding explained why Butler County and Slippery Rock University was not awarded the animal testing lab.
“We fought very hard to get that lab to Slippery Rock University. We heard directly from the Secretary that it went to Beaver County, but it will stay there and it will benefit Butler and surrounding counties,” Mustello added.
Bernstine says its important for people to hear directly from Harrisburg officials.
“I think it’s so important we bring people from Harrisburg, and people from all across the country, to come and see Butler County in order for folks to understand what is happening not only here locally, but across the Commonwealth and nation,” Bernstine said. “We want to consistently provide people the opportunity for people to ask questions to those in power.”
