A major initiative in the efforts of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s efforts to keep areas near roads looking nice has reached 30 years in existence.
PennDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program has been allowing volunteers to adopt a portion of a highway by collecting litter since 1990. In return, PennDOT places a sign recognizing the group for its efforts.
The program currently has nearly 5,000 participating groups with over 100,000 volunteers helping to maintain over 10,000 miles of state maintained roadways.
Over $5 million in annual savings is generated by this program which then allows PennDOT to redirect money toward maintaining safe roadways.
