The Pirates bats aided new pitcher Chris Archer in his first game with the Bucos Friday night as they beat the Cardinals 7-6 at PNC Park.
Just three pitches into the game Archer gave up a solo home run to Matt Carpenter but the Pirates took the lead back in the bottom of the first. Starling Marte had three hits, Gregory Polanco drove in three runs including a 2 run triple and Adam Fraizer capped off his 3 hit night with the game winning single in the 8th inning.
Archer worked out of some trouble in the game however struck out 6 Cardinals. With the bases loaded and one out in the second inning Archer struck out Yadier Molina and Paul Dejong while the crowd of over 26,000 fans stood and cheered. Newly acquired reliever Keone Kela got his first chance on the mound for the Pirates last night as well. Kela struck out one batter in the 7th inning and got some help from the outfield as Polanco threw out Carpenter at home plate on a perfect one hop throw to Cervelli.
Ivan Nova will start tonight for the Pirates as they take on the Cardinals in game 2 of 3 of the series. You can hear that game on WISR 680am starting at 6:40 p.m. with the pregames show. First pitch goes out at 7:05 p.m.
