The Pittsburgh Pirates selected two infielders with their first-round selections in the Major League Baseball draft last night. Their top pick was University of Arizona shortstop Kevin Newman who was taken 19th overall. Newman won back-to-back batting titles in the Cape Cod summer league the past two seasons. He batted .370 in 55 games this season at Arizona.
The Bucs also selected third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes, a high school star in Texas. He is the son of former major league player Charlie Hayes, who played for the Pirates in 1986 and spent 14 seasons in the majors. Hayes was the 32nd overall pick, a selection awarded to the Pirates when they lost free agent catcher Russell Martin.
The Pirates also had the 62nd pick overall in the second round, and took UCLA shortstop Kevin Kramer, who missed the 2014 season due to a shoulder injury.
The top player selected was shortstop Dansby Swanson from Vanderbilt, taken by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
