The Slippery Rock University football team has been ranked in the Division II preseason top-25 poll by the Sporting News and sophomore defensive end Marcus Martin (West Mifflin, Pa.) has been named a preseason All-American by Sporting News.
The latest issue of Sporting News that is on retail shelves currently includes the Division II preseason poll that ranks Slippery Rock No. 9 overall and second among four Super Region 1 institutions in the top-25.
Slippery Rock finished the 2014 season with a 9-3 overall record and won the PSAC championship by defeating then unbeaten and fifth-ranked Bloomsburg. The Rock won the PSAC West title for the third time in the last four years.
Martin was listed in the Sporting News issue as a preseason All-American after his breakout freshman year last fall. He broke the SRU single-season sack record and finished with 16.0 sacks to help lead The Rock to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship and an NCAA tournament appearance.
The Rock will open the 2015 season on the road at the University of New Haven (Conn.) Sept. 5.
Other PSAC teams ranked in the pre-season poll: Bloomsburg #13 and West Chester #18.
