Butler County native Marc Fogel has been released from a Russian prison after three and a half years.
The teacher from Oakmont was released as part of an exchange Tuesday afternoon. He should arrive at St. Andrews Air Force Base for an evaluation and reunion with family later tonight. From there he will be sent to a facility in Texas that assists with acclimation following isolation. It is not known if anyone else or anything was included as part of this exchange.
Fogel was detained by Russian authorities in August 2021 after being found in an airport with medical marijuana.
He was then sentenced to 14 years in prison in June 2022 and was formally designated as “wrongfully detained” by the U.S. State Department late last year.
