Elvis Costello and the Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs celebrated Keith Richards’ 81st birthday on Wednesday (December 18) by releasing a new cover of the Rolling Stones Between the Buttons classic from 1967, “Connection.” Hoffs joked that she and Costello “both wanted to do the Keith part, but I won!” After playing with Costello a few times, Hoffs was thrilled to finally make a studio track with the rock legend. “I had the great honor of singing with Elvis at a couple of his shows, and it was a dream to record a song together,” says Hoffs. Costello added, “What a gas to sing with Sue again. I’d be the ‘Keith’ to her ‘Mick’ any day.” In a press release for the new cover tune, Hoffs praised Richards for “his smile, his swagger, his songwriting — the way he moves on stage, as if his guitar is a part of his body and together they meld with the music and the emotion of the song.” (Rolling Stone)
