As Halloween nears, the National Fire Protection Association is reminding everyone to keep safety in mind.
Between 2018 and 2022, there was an average 835 homes fires that began with decorations. Almost half of those fires were due to the fact decorations were near heat, while a third of them were near candles.
To ensure you have a safe holiday season you can follow these simple tips from the NFPA:
- Keep dry decorations such as cornstalks, crepe paper, and dried flowers away from heat sources
- Keep candles in well-attended areas and keep them out of the path of trick and treaters
- Use glowsticks or electric candles for jack-o-lanterns. If you do use a candle keep the pumpkin away from other decorations.
- Do not have costumes that trails behind you that has easily light able fabric
- Check your fire alarms and make sure exits have no decorations blocking the way out.
