A historic business in the heart of West Sunbury was completely destroyed in a Christmas Day morning fire.
The first call came into the Butler County 911 Center around 10:15 a.m. for heavy smoke coming from Thompson’s Country Market on Route 308. According to emergency dispatch calls, the fire appeared to start in the back of the building.
Video from the scene shows the flames roaring through the business.
Once firefighters started battling the blaze, they found the fire had spread to the basement. Multiple tanker trucks were called in for assistance to help fight the flames; that included fire departments from outside Butler County.
Firefighters say the cold and windy conditions made it difficult to fight the fire.
Dispatchers say all occupants of the building were evacuated, but one person who lived above the market was taken to the hospital for burns. The victim is currently in stable condition.
There was also another family of three that lived in an apartment above the market. Three C’s Pizza in West Sunbury is helping collect items for the victims of the fire. You can reach out to them for more information.
The cause of the fire is not known.
