The Butler Area School District has made a policy change that will soon make the overdose reversal drug Naloxone available in school facilities.
At their meeting Monday night, the Butler School Board approved the second reading of the policy by a vote of 8 to 1.
Superintendent Dr. Brian White told the board that he spoke with local school nurses as well as law enforcement who both recommended enacting the policy since substances that could cause an overdose or adverse reaction could be easily touched during a bag search.
Even though this policy is now in effect, there are still procedural steps to follow before the drug will be able to be administered such as training for nurses and school police as well as getting the Naloxone from a pharmacy. This is expected to be completed by February.
