In Gee Chun tied a record-setting performance in the opening round of the Women’s PGA Championship in Bethesda, Maryland Thursday. Chun shot an 8-under 64 to take a five-stroke lead over two other players. No other player has been further ahead after 18 holes in a women’s major tournament. She matched a lead set by Mickey Wright in 1961.
Rory McIlroy is the first-round leader of the Travelers Championship in Connecticut after an 8-under 62.
68-year old Jay Haas is the first-round leader with Mark Hensby at the U.S. Senior Open in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Both shot 4-under 67’s at the Saucon Valley course. Haas is the fifth player to “shoot his age” at the U.S. Senior Open, joining Tom Watson, Hale Irwin, Harold McSpaden and Jerry Barber did it previously. Barber did it nine times in his career.
