The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Chicago Cubs 12-1 last night in the opening game of a four-game series at PNC Park. The game saw the 2022 debut of Pirates top prospect O’Neil Cruz, and he did not disappoint. He had two hits, including a double, plus four runs batted in and two runs scored.
He had the hardest hit ball into play as well as the fastest throw to first base in the major leagues this season.
Outfielder Bligh Madris also made his big league debut last night and had three hits and drove in two runs.
JT Brubaker earned his first victory in eight decisions this season with six shutout innings.
The two teams play again tonight at 7:05pm. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:40pm.
Right-hander pitcher Zach Thompson was placed in the Injured List with forearm inflammation. In six games in May, Thompson had a 2.45 ERA. After three appearances in June, he had a 2.51 ERA. Madris took his spot on the roster.
