Governor Tom Wolf is promoting an economic assistance program that aims to help former industrial towns in small municipalities.
Wolf says there are many towns across the state that have abandoned steel mills and other sites. He says that the Department of Community and Economic Development have grants that can help municipalities put those areas back on the tax rolls.
“A strong community demands a strong economy, and a strong workforce. That cannot be accomplished with vacant properties and empty lots. People are not going to come to a place like that,” Wolf said.
Wolf added that he has seen many areas take these grants and turn abandoned lots into housing, retail spaces, community centers and more.
